The Palm Jumeirah Crescent is an offshore development within the Arabian Gulf with access from the palm trunk via an underwater tunnel. The Crescent forms the outer breakwater for the Palm Jumeirah and extends approximately 12.5km from end to end.
There are 40 parcels of land along the length of the Crescent reserved for development by the hospitality sector tenants. These parcels are serviced by 4 district cooling plants whose function is the generation of process chilled water to serve the tenants of the land parcel as a commercial venture.
The Palm Crescent district cooling plants project was completed at the end of 2008 and delivers a total of 120,000 Tons of Refrigeration (TR) to the Atlantis Hotel and many other distinguished projects on the Crescent. The Atlantis alone accounts for 45,00TR of the plant capacity. At its inception the district cooling project on the Palm Crescent was the single largest project of its kind in the world.
The cooling plants at the Crescent have been designed to operate on sea water with provisions for a sea water desalination reverse osmosis plant. The desalinated water thus obtained is utilized at the condenser water circuit for circulation through the cooling towers resulting in enhanced self-sufficiency and eliminating the need to source expensive potable water to operate the plants.
